The 5E Lesson Plan Model: A Science Teacher Essential
Inquiry-Based Science Instruction
The 5E model is an instructional framework designed for science but applicable to any subject. It guides students through a cycle of inquiry that builds conceptual understanding.
The Five Es
Engage -- Capture student attention and activate prior knowledge. Use a demonstration, discrepant event, thought-provoking question, or real-world scenario. The goal is curiosity, not content delivery.
Example: Show a video of a ball rolling uphill on an optical illusion ramp. "How is this possible?"
Explore -- Students investigate the concept through hands-on activities, experiments, or guided exploration. The teacher circulates and asks probing questions but does NOT explain the concept yet.
Example: Students experiment with ramps, angles, and balls to discover relationships between slope and speed.
Explain -- Now the teacher introduces vocabulary, concepts, and explanations. Students connect their exploration experiences to formal science content. This is where direct instruction fits.
Example: Introduce gravity, friction, and inclined planes. Connect to what students discovered during exploration.
Elaborate -- Students apply their understanding to new situations. Extension activities, real-world applications, or deeper investigations push thinking further.

Example: Students design a marble run that demonstrates their understanding of forces and motion.
Evaluate -- Assess student understanding. This can be formal (quiz, test) or informal (exit ticket, presentation, lab report). Evaluation should also be embedded throughout the other stages.
Example: Students explain in writing how forces affected their marble run design.
Common Mistakes
Skipping Explore -- Going straight to Explain misses the inquiry. Students need to grapple with ideas before receiving explanations.
Explore Without Purpose -- Exploration must be structured. Students need guiding questions and clear objectives for their investigation.
Only Evaluating at the End -- Assessment should happen throughout. Check understanding at every stage.
