ELA Lesson Plan Ideas for Elementary Reading and Writing
Balancing the ELA Block
Elementary ELA includes reading comprehension, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening. You cannot do everything every day, but you can structure your block so each component gets regular attention.
Reading Comprehension
Think-Aloud Modeling -- Read aloud and verbalize your thinking: "I am confused here, so I will reread... Now I notice the author said however, which tells me something is changing..." Students need to see what skilled reading looks like.
Graphic Organizer Stations -- Story maps for fiction, main idea webs for nonfiction, Venn diagrams for comparing, cause-and-effect chains for informational text.
Book Talks -- Brief two to three minute talks about classroom library books. Students give book talks too. Builds reading community and exposure to diverse texts.
QAR Framework -- Teach four question types: Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, On My Own. Students approach comprehension questions strategically.
Writing
Mentor Text Mini-Lessons -- Choose a published text demonstrating the skill you are teaching. Identify what the author did, then students try it in their own writing.
Writing Process Folders -- Sections for brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, publish. Students work at their own pace.

Grammar and Vocabulary
Grammar in Context -- Teach grammar through student writing. See run-on sentences in student work? That is your mini-lesson. Pull anonymous examples from student writing.
Vocabulary Notebooks -- Students record new words with definitions in their own words, illustrations, sentences, and connections to other words.
Differentiating
Guided Reading Groups -- Small groups at similar levels while others work at stations. Use leveled texts.
Choice Reading Time -- Fifteen to twenty minutes daily reading self-selected books. Conference with individuals to assess comprehension.
Writing Conferences -- Brief one-on-one meetings. Students read aloud, identify one strength, set one goal.
