Florida B.E.S.T. Standards Lesson Plans with AI
Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards
Florida replaced Common Core with the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) standards for Math and ELA. If you teach in Florida, your lesson plans need to align to B.E.S.T., not Common Core.
The B.E.S.T. standards have some key differences from Common Core:
- Math: Greater emphasis on fluency and automaticity. More explicit about computational proficiency expectations at each grade level.
- ELA: Organized around foundational reading, reading comprehension, communication, and vocabulary. Specific content knowledge expectations built into the reading standards.
Generating B.E.S.T.-Aligned Lesson Plans
When using the Lesson Plan Generator, specify "Florida B.E.S.T. standards" as your framework. Include specific benchmark codes when possible (e.g., "MA.4.FR.1.1 — model and express fractions using objects, drawings, and number lines").

- Include the benchmark code — B.E.S.T. uses a specific coding system (MA for math, ELA for English Language Arts, followed by grade, strand, and standard numbers)
- Mention FSA/FAST prep if relevant — Florida's assessments drive much of the instructional focus
- Specify the strand — B.E.S.T. math strands include Number Sense, Fractions, Algebraic Reasoning, Measurement, Data Analysis, and Geometric Reasoning
B.E.S.T. Math vs. Common Core Math
Some topics shift grade levels between the two frameworks. For example, B.E.S.T. expects fraction operations earlier and places more emphasis on automatic recall of math facts. If you're using older materials aligned to Common Core, be aware that the grade-level expectations may have shifted.
