Guided Reading: How to Run Effective Groups

Small Group Reading Instruction That Works

Guided reading is small-group instruction where the teacher works with students at similar reading levels, guiding them through a text that offers just the right amount of challenge.

Setting Up Groups

Assess Students -- Use running records, benchmark assessments, or informal reading inventories to determine reading levels. Group students who read at similar levels and share similar needs.

Keep Groups Flexible -- Groups should change as students progress. Reassess regularly (every 4-6 weeks) and move students between groups.

Plan for Independence -- While you meet with one group, other students must work independently. Establish routines for literacy centers, independent reading, or partner work before beginning guided reading.

Running a Guided Reading Lesson

Before Reading (2-3 minutes) -- Introduce the book, set a purpose for reading, preview vocabulary, and activate background knowledge.

During Reading (10-15 minutes) -- Students read the text independently (not round-robin). Listen to individual students read, take notes on their strategies, and provide quick coaching prompts.

After Reading (5-7 minutes) -- Discuss the text, revisit the purpose, teach a specific strategy or skill, and do word work if needed.

Coaching Prompts

Use prompts that teach strategies, not just correct errors:

  • "Does that make sense?"
  • "Look at the picture. What word would make sense?"
  • "Get your mouth ready for the first sound."
  • "Try that again."
  • "What would make sense and look right?"

Common Mistakes

Round-Robin Reading -- Having students take turns reading aloud while others follow along is not guided reading. Everyone should read independently.

Same Groups All Year -- If groups never change, they are probably ability tracks, not flexible groups.

No Word Work -- Guided reading should include targeted phonics or word study based on observed needs.
