Homeschool High School: Transcripts and College Preparation
Preparing for Life After Homeschool
Homeschooling through high school is increasingly common, and colleges have become much more welcoming of homeschool applicants. The key is proper documentation and preparation.
Creating a Transcript
A homeschool transcript should include:
Student Information -- Full name, date of birth, graduation date, parent/school name and address.
Courses -- List all courses by year with:
- Course title (use standard names: "Algebra I" not "Math Book 3")
- Credit hours (typically 1.0 for full-year, 0.5 for semester courses)
- Grade (letter grade or percentage)
- Grade level when taken
GPA Calculation -- Use standard 4.0 scale. Weight honors/AP courses if your student took them.
Standardized Test Scores -- SAT, ACT, AP exam scores.
Graduation Date -- Typically when the student has completed requirements equivalent to your state's diploma requirements.

Course Planning
Plan high school courses to meet college requirements. Most colleges expect:
- 4 years English
- 3-4 years Math (through Algebra II minimum)
- 3 years Science (including lab sciences)
- 3 years Social Studies
- 2 years Foreign Language
- Electives
College Preparation
Dual Enrollment -- Community college courses give your student college experience and credit. Many homeschoolers start dual enrollment in 10th or 11th grade.
Standardized Tests -- Most colleges still accept or require SAT/ACT scores. Prepare adequately.
Extracurriculars -- Document activities, volunteer work, jobs, and leadership roles. Colleges want well-rounded applicants.
Letters of Recommendation -- Get letters from non-family members: co-op teachers, coaches, mentors, employers, or community leaders.
Course Descriptions -- Prepare a one-paragraph description of each course covering content, materials used, and major assignments. Some colleges request these.
