How to Use Data to Inform Instruction Without Drowning in Spreadsheets
Every teacher collects data. Exit tickets, formative assessments, unit tests, informal observations — the data exists. What rarely exists is a fast, low-overhead system for turning that data into decisions about what to teach next, to whom, and how.
The problem isn't lack of data or lack of intention. What did students understand? Which concepts or skills did most students demonstrate successfully? These don't need more instruction — they've been taught.
What did students not understand? Which concepts or skills showed gaps for many students? These need either reteaching, a different approach, or more practice.
Which students need something different? Beyond the class-level view, which individual students need additional support, and which need extension? These students need targeted responses, not whole-class solutions.
These three questions convert data from observation to decision. If the data can't answer at least two of them, it's the wrong data — or it wasn't well-designed.
What Makes Data Actionable
Data is actionable when the teacher can look at it and make a decision in under five minutes. This requires data that is specific enough to point to the content, not just a general score.
A test score of 74% is not actionable. It tells you a student missed about a quarter of the questions, but not which concepts those questions tested.
