Movement Breaks: Why Students Need Them and How to Use Them
Bodies Need to Move
Students are not designed to sit still for hours. Research consistently shows that movement breaks improve focus, behavior, and academic performance. They are not a reward or a waste of time -- they are a learning strategy.
Why Movement Breaks Work
Brain Science -- Physical movement increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, improving cognitive function. It also triggers the release of neurotransmitters that improve mood and attention.
Attention Spans -- The general guideline is that students can sustain focused attention for roughly their age in minutes. A 7-year-old can focus for about 7 minutes. Breaks reset the attention clock.
Behavior -- Many behavior problems stem from students being asked to sit still longer than they are developmentally able to. Movement breaks reduce fidgeting, off-task behavior, and disruptions.
