New York Next Generation Standards Lesson Plans with AI
New York's Next Generation Standards
New York adopted its own Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA and Math in 2017, replacing the original Common Core adoption. While similar to Common Core, NY Next Gen standards include key revisions:
- Fewer, clearer, higher standards — some redundancies from Common Core were removed
- Revised grade-level expectations — some content shifted between grades
- Additional guidance on fluency — math fluency expectations were clarified
- Culturally responsive framework — emphasis on diverse texts and perspectives in ELA
For science, New York adopted the P-12 Science Learning Standards based on NGSS.
Generating NY-Aligned Lesson Plans
When using the Lesson Plan Generator, specify "New York Next Generation standards" for ELA and Math, or "New York P-12 Science Learning Standards" for science.
Include specific standard codes when possible. NY Next Gen uses a coding system like: NY-4.NF.1 (math) or RL.4.2 (ELA reading literature, grade 4, standard 2).
New York-Specific Considerations
Regents Prep: For high school teachers, Regents exams drive instruction. When generating plans for Regents-level courses, specify "Regents exam preparation" and the specific exam (Living Environment, US History, Algebra I, etc.).

Diverse Learner Emphasis: New York's framework emphasizes culturally responsive and sustaining education (CR-SE). Include "culturally responsive teaching" in your lesson plan requirements to align with this state priority.
ELL Population: New York has a large English Language Learner population, particularly in NYC. Use the Differentiation tool to generate ELL modifications and include "ENL supports" (English as a New Language — New York's terminology) in your lesson plan requirements.
Social Studies: New York has its own K-12 Social Studies Framework that emphasizes inquiry and uses a specific structure (Key Ideas, Conceptual Understandings, Content Specifications). Specify "New York Social Studies Framework" when generating history or civics plans.
