Number Talks: Building Math Fluency Through Discussion
What Are Number Talks?
Number talks are short (10-15 minute) daily routines where students solve math problems mentally, then share and discuss their strategies. The goal is not just getting the right answer but developing flexible mathematical thinking.
How to Run a Number Talk
Present a Problem -- Write a problem on the board. No paper, no pencils, no calculators. Students solve it in their heads.
Silent Signals -- When students have an answer, they put a thumb up near their chest (not waving hands). If they find a second strategy, they put up a second finger. This gives everyone think time.
Collect Answers -- Ask for answers without indicating which are correct. Write all answers on the board.
Share Strategies -- Ask students to explain HOW they solved it. Record their thinking visually. "Who solved it a different way?"
Connect Strategies -- Help students see relationships between strategies. Which are most efficient? When would you use each one?

Choosing Problems
Choose problems that invite multiple strategies:
For Addition -- 27 + 38 (students might add 27+40-2, or 30+38-3, or 20+30+7+8)
For Multiplication -- 15 x 12 (students might do 15x10+15x2, or 12x15, or 30x6)
For Fractions -- 1/2 + 3/4 (students might convert to common denominators or think about visual models)
Benefits
- Builds mental math fluency
- Develops number sense and flexibility
- Teaches students that math is about thinking, not just procedures
- Creates a classroom culture where multiple approaches are valued
- Gives teachers insight into student thinking
Tips for Success
Start simple and build complexity gradually. Establish the routine and norms first. Never shame wrong answers. Celebrate interesting strategies even when the answer is incorrect.
