Teaching Opinion Writing: Lessons and Strategies

Helping Students Find and Defend Their Voice

Opinion writing teaches students to take a position and support it with reasons and evidence. It is foundational for persuasive and argumentative writing later on.

The Structure

Teach a simple, clear structure first:

Introduction -- State your opinion clearly. "I believe..." or "In my opinion..."

Reasons with Evidence -- Give at least two to three reasons that support your opinion. Each reason should include an example, fact, or explanation.

Conclusion -- Restate your opinion and leave the reader with something to think about.

Effective Strategies

Start with Topics They Care About -- "Should students have homework?" or "What is the best lunch food?" Students write better when they care about the topic.

Mentor Texts -- Read opinion pieces aloud. Picture books like "I Wanna Iguana" or "Dear Mrs. LaRue" show opinion writing in action.

Graphic Organizers -- Provide a simple organizer: Opinion at the top, three reason boxes below, conclusion at the bottom. This scaffolds the thinking before the writing.

Sentence Starters -- For younger or struggling writers, provide frames: "I believe ___ because ___. Another reason is ___. Finally, ___."

Debate First -- Have students discuss and debate their topic orally before writing. Talking through arguments clarifies thinking.

Common Pitfalls

  • Students stating opinions without supporting them
  • Confusing opinions with facts
  • Weak or missing conclusions
  • Repetitive reasons

Address each explicitly with examples and non-examples.
