PE Report Card Language That Reflects Real Learning

What PE Report Cards Should Actually Say

Physical education is assessed on much more than whether a student tries hard or likes gym. Standards-based PE programs look at motor skill development, movement concepts, cooperative skills, fitness knowledge, and personal responsibility. Your report card comments should reflect that depth.

The challenge is writing meaningfully about physical skills in words. Here is language that works.

Motor Skills and Movement

  • "is developing mature running form, including arm drive and forward lean, which is improving speed and efficiency"
  • "demonstrates strong overhand throwing mechanics and is working to apply consistent technique under game conditions"
  • "shows solid spatial awareness during movement activities and adjusts positioning based on others around them"
  • "is building coordination in dribbling with both dominant and non-dominant hands"
  • "has shown significant improvement in balance and body control during gymnastics and movement sequences"

Fitness and Health Knowledge

  • "understands the components of health-related fitness and can explain how our activities connect to each component"
  • "sets personal fitness goals and monitors progress using data from our class fitness assessments"
  • "is developing an understanding of how heart rate connects to exercise intensity"

Cooperation, Sportsmanship, and Responsibility

  • "demonstrates positive sportsmanship during competitive activities and encourages classmates across all skill levels"
  • "takes responsibility for equipment, follows class routines independently, and transitions between activities efficiently"
  • "is working on the skill of accepting officiating decisions and redirecting energy back into the game"
  • "contributes to a positive team environment and includes classmates who are less confident in physical activities"

For Students Who Struggle Physically

Be careful with comments about physical skill. Some students have developmental differences, coordination disorders, or chronic health conditions. Focus on effort, growth, and participation:
