Progress Report Examples for Elementary Teachers

What Parents Need from Progress Reports

Parents want to know three things: How is my child doing? What are they learning? What should we do at home? Your progress reports should answer all three clearly and concisely.

Report Format

A strong progress report includes:

  • Subject-specific comments addressing both strengths and growth areas
  • Behavior and social skills observations
  • Attendance and participation notes
  • Goals for the next reporting period
  • Home support suggestions

Sample Progress Report Comments

Reading:

"[Student] is reading at level [X], which is [at/above/below] grade level expectations. They demonstrate strong literal comprehension and are working on making inferences about character motivation. They enjoy reading independently during choice time and have completed [X] books this quarter. At home, asking 'why do you think the character did that?' after reading together will support their inferential thinking."

Math:

"[Student] has mastered addition and subtraction with regrouping and is currently learning multiplication concepts. They use arrays and equal groups to model multiplication and are building toward fluency with facts. Practicing multiplication facts at home for 5-10 minutes daily will support classroom instruction."

We are working on adding descriptive details and dialogue to make their stories more engaging. Encouraging them to tell stories orally before writing helps organize their ideas."

Behavior:

"[Student] is a kind and respectful member of our classroom. They follow routines consistently and show responsibility for their learning. They are working on raising their hand before speaking during whole-group discussions."
