Report Card Comments for Behavior and Social Skills

The Delicate Balance of Behavior Comments

Behavior comments are the most sensitive part of a report card. Parents are protective of their children, and comments about behavior can feel like personal criticism. The key is being honest, specific, and solution-oriented.

Positive Behavior Comments

  • "[Student] is a respectful and responsible member of our classroom community. They follow expectations consistently and are often a positive role model for peers."
  • "[Student] demonstrates excellent self-regulation and handles frustration with maturity. They seek help appropriately when needed."
  • "[Student] shows genuine kindness toward classmates and goes out of their way to include others. Their positive attitude contributes to a welcoming classroom environment."

Growth Area Comments (Constructive)

  • "[Student] is working on staying focused during independent work time. We are using [specific strategy] to support their attention, and they respond well to gentle reminders."
  • "[Student] sometimes has difficulty resolving conflicts with peers independently. We are practicing conflict resolution strategies and they are making progress in using their words to express frustration."
  • "[Student] is developing self-control during transitions and group activities. Consistent expectations at home around listening and turn-taking will support the growth we are seeing at school."

Work Habits

  • "[Student] consistently completes work on time and puts thoughtful effort into assignments. They take pride in producing quality work."
  • "[Student] is working on completing assignments within the given time frame. Breaking tasks into smaller steps and checking in on progress is helping them build this skill."

Tips for Behavior Comments

Always describe the behavior, not the child. "Has difficulty staying seated" is about behavior. "Is hyperactive" is about the child. Frame growth areas alongside the strategies you are using and the progress you are seeing.
