Responsive Teaching: How to Use Formative Data to Adjust Instruction

Formative assessment has been discussed in education for decades. Most teachers use exit tickets, white boards, quick polls, and similar tools. The data gets collected. What often doesn't happen is the response: instruction changes because of what the data revealed.

The assessment is only the first step. Responsive teaching — the actual adjustment of instruction based on what you learn — is where the learning gains come from.

The Gap Between Collecting and Using

There's a specific failure point between formative data collection and instructional response, and it's usually one of three things:

The data is collected but not reviewed before the next lesson. Exit tickets go into a folder. The teacher plans the next lesson from the curriculum guide rather than from what students showed.

The data is reviewed but the interpretation is wrong. A teacher sees that seventy percent of students got the exit ticket correct and moves on. The group distribution tells you what to do next:

Mostly got it (80%+): brief reteach of the specific confusion point for the few who need it, then move forward.

Mixed (50-80%): the next lesson starts with reteaching, not new content. Identify the specific misunderstanding — not just "they got it wrong" but "they got it wrong in this specific way" — and target that.

Mostly didn't get it (less than 50%): this is a planning problem, not a student problem. The instruction didn't work. The next lesson is a redesign: different entry point, different representation, more scaffolding.

"They don't get it" is not actionable. "They understand the definition of photosynthesis but think it happens in the dark" is actionable. The specificity of the misconception determines the specificity of the response.

Pattern-analyze your exit tickets: what error do students make most frequently? Is it a factual gap (they don't know X), a procedural gap (they know the steps but apply them in the wrong sequence), or a conceptual gap (they have a fundamental misunderstanding about how X works)? Each requires a different response.

Procedural gaps: re-model the process, add explicit practice with feedback.

Whole-Class Response vs. Small Group Response

When most of the class shares a misconception, re-teach to the whole class. Brief and targeted: not a full new lesson, but a focused five-to-ten-minute address of the specific gap, followed by a check.

When the class is split — some students understand, others don't — a whole-class re-teach bores the students who already got it and may not reach the students who didn't, because they need a different instructional approach, not the same thing again.
