Responsive Teaching: How to Use Formative Data to Adjust Instruction
Formative assessment has been discussed in education for decades. Most teachers use exit tickets, white boards, quick polls, and similar tools. The data gets collected. What often doesn't happen is the response: instruction changes because of what the data revealed.
The assessment is only the first step. Responsive teaching — the actual adjustment of instruction based on what you learn — is where the learning gains come from.
The Gap Between Collecting and Using
There's a specific failure point between formative data collection and instructional response, and it's usually one of three things:
The data is collected but not reviewed before the next lesson. Exit tickets go into a folder. The teacher plans the next lesson from the curriculum guide rather than from what students showed.
The data is reviewed but the interpretation is wrong. A teacher sees that seventy percent of students got the exit ticket correct and moves on. But the thirty percent who didn't includes the same students who consistently struggle — and the data is confirming a pattern rather than informing a response.
The data is understood but the teacher doesn't know how to adjust. What do you actually do when you find out that half the class has a specific misconception? This is the most common gap, and it's the one that instructional routines can address.
Three-Category Triage
After any formative assessment, sort student responses into three groups: got it, almost got it, didn't get it. You don't need a rubric for this. A quick read of exit tickets produces a rough sort in five minutes.
The group distribution tells you what to do next:
Mostly got it (80%+): brief reteach of the specific confusion point for the few who need it, then move forward.
Mixed (50-80%): the next lesson starts with reteaching, not new content. Identify the specific misunderstanding — not just "they got it wrong" but "they got it wrong in this specific way" — and target that.
Mostly didn't get it (less than 50%): this is a planning problem, not a student problem. The instruction didn't work. The next lesson is a redesign: different entry point, different representation, more scaffolding.
Identifying the Specific Misconception
"They don't get it" is not actionable. "They understand the definition of photosynthesis but think it happens in the dark" is actionable. The specificity of the misconception determines the specificity of the response.

Pattern-analyze your exit tickets: what error do students make most frequently? Is it a factual gap (they don't know X), a procedural gap (they know the steps but apply them in the wrong sequence), or a conceptual gap (they have a fundamental misunderstanding about how X works)? Each requires a different response.
Factual gaps: brief direct instruction or re-teach.
Procedural gaps: re-model the process, add explicit practice with feedback.
Conceptual gaps: address the underlying misunderstanding directly, often with a new representation or example that counters the misconception.

When most of the class shares a misconception, re-teach to the whole class. Brief and targeted: not a full new lesson, but a focused five-to-ten-minute address of the specific gap, followed by a check.
When the class is split — some students understand, others don't — a whole-class re-teach bores the students who already got it and may not reach the students who didn't, because they need a different instructional approach, not the same thing again.
Small group pull-aside: five to eight students for a targeted ten-minute re-teach while the rest of the class does extension or application work. This is more logistically complex but produces better outcomes for both groups.
The Check-Back
Adjusting instruction is only complete when you verify the adjustment worked. Add a brief re-assessment after a re-teach: two or three questions targeting the exact gap you addressed. The check-back tells you whether your adjustment was effective.
Teachers who check back learn which re-teaching strategies work for which types of misconceptions. Over time, this builds a diagnostic repertoire: when I see this pattern, I use this response, and it typically works. That is the core skill of responsive teaching.
The students who most need responsive teaching are the ones whose needs are most often invisible to the data: they answer the multiple choice correctly by process of elimination while holding a fundamental misconception, or they fail a question for a reason unrelated to the concept being assessed. Probing conversation alongside formative assessments — even briefly — surfaces what the data alone misses.
