Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Lesson Plans with AI
SEL Isn't an Add-On. It's the Foundation.
Social-emotional learning is what makes everything else in your classroom work. Students who can manage their emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions are students who can learn. The research is clear: SEL improves academic outcomes, reduces behavior problems, and increases long-term wellbeing.
But most teachers weren't trained to plan SEL lessons. You know it matters. You just don't always know how to structure a 30-minute lesson on "empathy" that doesn't feel like a lecture about being nice.
CASEL's Five Competencies
The CASEL framework organizes SEL into five core competencies:
- Self-Awareness — recognizing your emotions, strengths, and limitations
- Self-Management — managing emotions, setting goals, maintaining discipline
- Social Awareness — empathy, perspective-taking, appreciating diversity
- Relationship Skills — communication, cooperation, conflict resolution
- Responsible Decision-Making — making constructive choices about behavior and social interactions
Each competency can be taught through explicit lessons, integrated into academic content, or embedded in classroom routines.
Generating SEL Lesson Plans
Use the Lesson Plan Generator with these inputs:
- Subject: "Social-Emotional Learning" or integrate into an existing subject
- Topic: Specify the CASEL competency and a specific skill (e.g., "self-management: identifying and coping with anger" or "relationship skills: giving and receiving constructive feedback")
- Grade level: SEL looks very different in kindergarten vs. 8th grade
- Include: "Discussion, role-play, and reflection"
The generated plan will include age-appropriate activities, discussion questions, scenarios for practice, and a reflection/closure that connects the skill to students' real lives.

SEL Lesson Examples
K-2 Self-Awareness: Read a picture book about feelings. Students identify the character's emotions at different points. Students draw their own "feelings thermometer" showing what they feel at different times of the school day.
3-5 Relationship Skills: Present a conflict scenario. Students role-play two different responses — one that escalates and one that resolves. Discuss what made the difference. Students write their own "conflict resolution plan."
6-8 Responsible Decision-Making: Ethical dilemma discussion. Present a scenario with no clear right answer. Students discuss in small groups, consider consequences of different choices, and share their reasoning. Debrief on how values and perspectives influence decisions.
Integrating SEL Into Academic Lessons
You don't always need a standalone SEL lesson. Integrate SEL into existing content:
- ELA: Character analysis through an SEL lens — what emotions drive this character's decisions?
- Science: Group lab work with explicit collaboration expectations and reflection on teamwork
- Social Studies: Perspective-taking exercises when studying different cultures or historical events
- Math: Growth mindset framing — "mistakes are data, not failures" — with explicit discussion of math anxiety
When generating lesson plans in any subject, add "integrate SEL skill: [specific skill]" to your requirements.
