STEM Activities by Grade Level: Easy-to-Implement Ideas

STEM Does Not Require a Lab

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities do not require expensive equipment or specialized training. Many of the best STEM challenges use basic materials and focus on problem-solving and creative thinking.

K-2 STEM Activities

Bridge Building -- Build a bridge from paper, tape, and craft sticks that holds a toy car. Test and redesign.

Sink or Float Investigation -- Predict, test, and sort objects. Discuss properties that affect buoyancy.

Paper Airplane Challenge -- Design, build, and test paper airplanes for distance or accuracy. Measure and record results.

Building Tall Structures -- Use marshmallows and toothpicks (or straws and tape) to build the tallest structure possible.

Plant Growth Experiment -- Grow seeds under different conditions (light, water, soil type). Measure and record growth.

3-5 STEM Activities

Egg Drop Challenge -- Design a container that protects a raw egg from a high drop. Engineering design process in action.

Coding with Scratch -- Create simple games or animations. Integrates technology and math concepts.

Water Filtration -- Build a water filter from sand, gravel, cotton, and other materials. Test with muddy water.

Simple Machines Scavenger Hunt -- Find and identify simple machines around the school. Then design a compound machine.

Measurement Olympics -- Events that require estimation, measurement, and data analysis.

6-8 STEM Activities

Rube Goldberg Machines -- Design chain-reaction machines that accomplish a simple task in the most complex way possible.

Catapult Design -- Build and test catapults. Measure distance, adjust variables, and analyze data.

App Design -- Use prototyping tools to design (not necessarily build) an app that solves a real problem.

Forensic Science -- Fingerprint analysis, mystery powders identification, or chromatography.

Roller Coaster Physics -- Design marble roller coasters from paper tubes and tape. Calculate speed and energy.

Implementation Tips

  • Use the engineering design process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, Improve
  • Focus on process, not product
  • Celebrate failure as learning
  • Connect to real-world problems
