Teacher Resume Tips: Stand Out in a Competitive Market

Your Resume Is a Marketing Document

Your resume is not a job description -- it is a marketing document that shows your impact. Principals review hundreds of resumes. Yours needs to stand out immediately.

Format

One to Two Pages -- New teachers: one page. Experienced teachers: two pages maximum.

Clean and Scannable -- Use clear headings, consistent formatting, and white space. Avoid graphics, colors, or unusual fonts.

Contact Information -- Name, phone, email, and city/state at the top. Include LinkedIn if updated.

Content That Matters

Professional Summary -- Two to three sentences highlighting your experience, specializations, and what makes you effective. Tailor this to each position.

Quantify Your Impact -- Numbers tell stories:

Action Verbs -- Start bullets with strong verbs: designed, implemented, increased, facilitated, collaborated, assessed, differentiated, integrated.

Relevant Experience -- List teaching positions with school name, grades, subjects, and years. Include student teaching.

Certifications -- List all teaching certifications with state and expiration dates.

Education -- Degrees, institutions, graduation dates. GPA only if above 3.5 and you are a new graduate.

What to Leave Off

  • References (provide them when asked)
  • Irrelevant work experience (unless you are a career changer -- then frame it as an asset)
  • Personal information (age, marital status, photo)
  • Generic statements ("I love children" or "passionate about teaching")

Tailoring

Read the job posting carefully. Mirror their language in your resume. If they mention technology integration, make sure your resume shows technology integration experience.
