Using Data to Inform Instruction: A Practical Guide for Classroom Teachers
"Data-driven instruction" has become an education buzzword that sometimes sounds more like surveillance than teaching. But at its core, using data to inform instruction just means making teaching decisions based on evidence of what students understand rather than on what you covered.

If your data shows that almost no students are reaching proficiency on a specific type of task, the instruction itself may need adjustment — not just the students.
Data that reveals whole-class patterns saves you from misattributing a teaching problem to a student problem.

Data use fails when it becomes administratively overwhelming — when the system of tracking and analyzing data takes more time than the instruction it's supposed to inform. Sustainable data practices are simple and embedded:
