Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand a text. A score of 5.0 means the text is appropriate for a typical 5th grader. It's based on average sentence length and syllable count per word.
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
Scores range from 0 to 100. Higher scores mean easier text. 60-70 is considered standard (8th-9th grade). 70-80 is fairly easy (7th grade). 80-90 is easy (6th grade). Most classroom materials should target 10-20 points above your students' independent reading level.
How accurate is this analysis?
Readability formulas give a useful estimate but aren't perfect. They measure sentence length and word complexity but can't account for context, prior knowledge, or text structure. Use them as a guide alongside your professional judgment.
What should I use this for?
Check the reading level of handouts, worksheets, test questions, parent communications, and any text you give to students. It's especially useful for ensuring materials are accessible to ELL students and students reading below grade level.
