What Is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In education, STEM refers to an interdisciplinary approach that integrates these four disciplines through hands-on, real-world problem-solving rather than teaching them in isolation.

Effective STEM instruction emphasizes inquiry, design thinking, collaboration, and the engineering design process. Students don't just learn science facts or math procedures — they apply knowledge to solve authentic problems, often through project-based learning.

STEM education has expanded to include STEAM (adding Art/Design) and STREAM (adding Reading). The goal is to prepare students for careers in STEM fields, which are projected to grow significantly.
