Remixed Lesson: Ecosystems (2nd Grade, Hands-On)

Original: 5th grade ecosystems — food chains, energy flow, producers/consumers/decomposers

Objective: Students will identify living and non-living things in an ecosystem and explain how animals depend on plants for food.

Warm-Up (5 min): Show pictures of a pond. Ask: “What's alive? What's not alive?” Sort into two columns on the board.

Activity — Build a Mini Ecosystem (20 min): Each table group gets a clear container with soil, water, small plants, and plastic animal figures. Students arrange their ecosystem and draw it in their science journals, labeling living and non-living parts.

Discussion (5 min): “What would happen if we took away all the plants? Could the animals survive?”

Exit Ticket: Draw one food chain with 3 parts (plant → animal → animal) and label each one.

What Changed: Simplified vocabulary (no “producers/decomposers”), replaced abstract web activity with hands-on building, shortened from 45 to 30 minutes, added drawing for assessment.
