Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): What Teachers Need to Know
Understanding WHY, Not Just WHAT
A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a systematic process for identifying the function (purpose) behind a student's challenging behavior. The FBA answers the question: "Why is this student engaging in this behavior?"
Why FBAs Matter
Behavior always serves a function. When we understand the function, we can design effective interventions. Without understanding function, we are guessing -- and guessing usually means punishing, which often makes behavior worse.
The Four Functions of Behavior
Nearly all behavior serves one of four functions:
Attention -- The student wants attention from peers or adults (even negative attention).
Escape/Avoidance -- The student wants to avoid a task, person, setting, or situation.
Access to Tangibles -- The student wants access to an item, activity, or privilege.
Sensory Stimulation -- The behavior itself provides internal reinforcement (stimming, fidgeting, humming).

The FBA Process
Define the Behavior -- Describe the behavior in specific, observable, measurable terms. Not "aggressive" but "hits peers with open hand during unstructured time, averaging 3 times per day."
Collect Data
- ABC Data -- Antecedent (what happened before), Behavior (what the student did), Consequence (what happened after). Patterns emerge from ABC data.
- Frequency/Duration -- How often does it happen? How long does it last?
- Setting Analysis -- When and where does it occur? When does it NOT occur?
Analyze Data -- Look for patterns. Does the behavior happen during specific subjects? With specific people? At specific times? What typically happens after the behavior?
Identify Function -- Based on the data, hypothesize the function. This drives the intervention plan.
Your Role as a Teacher
- Complete ABC data collection forms accurately and consistently
- Provide information about when behavior does and does not occur
- Participate in FBA team meetings
- Implement recommended strategies consistently
- Report changes in behavior frequency and intensity
The FBA leads to a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) with specific strategies. See our BIP guide for implementation details.
Use the IEP goal generator to write behavior goals aligned with FBA findings.
