What Is 504 Plan?

A plan that provides accommodations for students with disabilities to access general education, protected under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

A 504 Plan is a formal plan developed under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that provides accommodations to students with disabilities so they can access the general education curriculum on an equal basis with their peers. Unlike an IEP, a 504 Plan does not require a specific learning disability classification — any physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity qualifies.

Common accommodations in a 504 Plan include extended time on tests, preferential seating, reduced homework, use of assistive technology, and modified grading. The plan is developed by a team that includes the student's parents and school staff.

504 Plans are less intensive than IEPs and do not include specialized instruction or measurable goals. They focus on removing barriers so the student can access the same education as their peers.
